Accident RID (CSI)

Number of CSI accidents involving at least one railway vehicle carrying dangerous goods.

The name RID comes from the international agreements regulating the transport of this type of goods by rail: https://otif.org/en/?page_id=1105

CSIs or Common Safety Indicators are a tool for monitoring the general evolution of railway safety. This tool facilitates the evaluation of the achievement of the Common Safety Objectives.

The CSIs are based on European standards and the indicators include the significant accidents. That is to say, any accident involving at least one moving railway vehicle, the consequences of which are :

  • a death or a seriously injured person, or
  • significant damage (minimum €50,000) to rolling stock, track, other installations or the environment, or
  • major traffic disruptions (minimum 6 hours on main track).
